Death Before Dishonor will be Ring of Honor’s second PPV under Tony Khan on June 23. Mercedes Martinez faces Serena Deeb for the Ring of Honor Women’s Championship.
Martinez and Deeb have been keeping an eye on each other for the past few months. The two partnered up five times for matches on AEW Dark: Elevation, AEW Dark, and AEW Rampage. Although they never seemed to have the best relationship, the pair won every single one of their matches together. Inevitably, Serena Deeb attacked Mercedes Martinez after their win on Rampage a few weeks ago. Serena put Mercedes in the Serenity Lock, forced her to tap, and won the ROH Women’s Championship. It was then announced that the two would be facing off for the Championship at Death Before Dishonor.
Mercedes has had an impressive run as ROH Women’s Championship. She defeated Willow Nightingale for the interim ROH Women’s Championship at Supercard of Honor on April 1, 2022. Martinez beat ROH Women’s Champion Deonna Purazzo on May 4’s AEW Dynamite to win the undisputed champion. Martinez has had four successful title defenses since then. She has picked up impressive victories against Viva Van, Hyan, Trish Adora, and Mazzerati on various AEW programming. She also has a 12-3 record in 2022.
Serena Deeb has been nearly unstoppable since she started with AEW. So far, her overall 2022 record in AEW is 13-1, with her only loss being to Thunder Rosa when she failed to win the AEW Women’s Championship at Double or Nothing. Earlier this year, she held “The Professor’s 5 Minute Rookie Challenge” where she would challenge any rookie to try and last 5 minutes in a match with her. She won every single challenge. The loss against Thunder Rosa seems to have motivated Deeb even more as she’s had no problem completely tearing apart any opponent that is thrown her way. This could be potentially dangerous to Mercedes Martinez if she’s not properly prepared to step in the ring with Deeb.
Mercedes vs. Serena has the potential to steal the show this Saturday. Both women are veterans in the wrestling business and have won many championships in multiple promotions over the years. Both women have also proved time and time again that they are the real deal and must be taken seriously or else it could spell disaster for their opponent. I expect this match to be a must-see for anyone that is a fan of wrestling. I’m sure both women will bring their absolute best for the opportunity to represent the incredible Ring of Honor women’s division. Although I hope more women’s matches are announced for Death Before Dishonor, I know Deeb and Martinez will make sure that everyone is paying attention to the amazing women’s wrestling happening in ROH, AEW, and every other company on the scene right now.
