The Salt Shakkas, Senior Writer Nickie Booshie and Editor-in-Chief Driune Santana, sit down with upcoming star Olivia Devine. They discuss her time in professional wrestling and the struggles she faces as a black woman. In addition, they talk about mental health along with reasons why Olivia Devine is the one to watch in 2023!
Being Black In Professional Wrestling
“I don’t want to say it’s like so hard but it is moments where you kind of just know that you being Black might be something that’s gonna hold you back a little bit but I feel like your talent is what sort of speaks for itself. Sometimes you got to be undeniable to the point where they don’t have a choice but to see you”
Devine goes on to say that black women have to work twice as hard to be half as good to others.
Representation Matters
“Even me growing up when I was younger, you didn’t see a lot of black women on TV like that. So when you did see one it’s like, ‘Oh!’, that’s what got me into wrestling. I saw Booker T’s wife on TV.”
Not Letting Struggles Hold You Back
“It’s the fact that I have to you know subconsciously understand that this is going to be a struggle to some degree, but also understand, I don’t have to let it hold me back.”
Her Experience At Ladies Night Out
“For Ladies Night Out, I feel like it’s a great opportunity because other promotions get to view you – you know, those platforms are also really good platforms, they put the eyes on you. You know we live in a world now where social media is just what you have to use that to promote yourself now more than ever.”
