Athena vs Mina Shirakawa: Owen Hart Women's Tournament Quarterfinal

The annual Owen Hart tournament is officially underway and boy did AEW make sure that the women’s tournament kicked off with some electrifying action!

At arguably one of the best PPVs of the year for the promotion, Double or Nothing. The Forever Champ Athena took on Mina Shirakawa for the quarter final matchup.

Athena has been a champ for over 1200 days. Without having a lull in her reign. Let that sink in.

Mina is someone that is always most see TV. This announcement of this match in the tournament made me and probably other viewers stay excited to see this as an early entry of this beloved annual event.

Mina is someone that has history with Athena. Challenging for this ROH world women's title last year. But not being able to dethrone the champ.

We see a very strong opening match for the Owen Hart Women’s tournament with these two.

Mina goes for the kill early on and saves time to be a little cheeky and play a bit. But Athena is all business and stays on Shirakawa. Even short circuiting the LED board at ringside with Mina’s body with a brutal kick to the ringside guard rail.

Mina comes back into this match throwing in some submissions that would take out a mere mortal, but not Athena. No, ROH world women’s champion comes back strong.

Mina shows no fear with dealing with the champ when she takes to the sky with a tornado like dive that throws Athena for a loop.

A brutal curb stomp from Athena sidelines Mina as Athena rehabs a leg that has starts to bother her during the middle of the match.

A figure four leg lock almost takes Athena out. Continuing to mess with Athena’s injured knee.

The ole’ face off the top rope gets Athena the win . And a trip to the semi final round.

Is there any match that Athena cannot win??

Be sure to tune into AEW Dynamite weekly on Wednesdays and future PPVs in the summer to see how the rest of the Owen Hart women's tournament pans out!
