New Japan Pro-Wrestling and World Wonder Ring Stardom first announced their co-produced wrestling event “Historic X-Over” back in August this year stating that the the card would feature in-ring talent from both companies. Takaaki Kidani, owner of Stardom would also announce that the inaugural IWGP Women’s Champion will be crowned at the event in the finals of a seven-woman tournament that would begin in October.
After two competitive semi-final matches this past October 23rd, Mayu Iwatani and KAIRI emerged victorious from their respective bouts and were set to clash in the finals held at “Historic X-Over” for the inaugural title. This marks both women’s first matchup against one another in singles competition since 2017 prior to KAIRI’s migration to the United States for her participation in WWE’S Mae Young Classic Tournament which would then lead to her working with the company until December 2021.
It was then announced on the New Japan Pro-Wrestling website this past Sunday, November 6th, the Inaugural IWGP Women’s Championship Tournament Finals Match between Mayu Iwatani and KAIRI is set to headline and close the show in the main event. With the match’s historic significance in introducing NJPW’s first championship available to women since its establishment in 1972, there is no doubt that both competitors will look to deliver the performance of a lifetime to etch their names in the history books.
